Domestic Services

Rewires

Rewiring homes can be a straightforward job but it can be complicated if the previous electric and wiring instalment was carried out by someone ill-equipped to do the job. We have rewired homes from many different eras and many different types of homes and are confident we can handle the rewiring of any home we come across.

Rewiring is quite a common job, especially in homes which people have recently bought or are renovating.

There are a few ways in which you will be in need of a home rewired. You will need to have your home rewired if there is obvious damage to light sockets and other electrical equipment throughout the home, overheating within the sockets, few sockets in a room as this indicates that the wiring is old – most newer homes have plenty of electrical sockets and often there is at least one double socket available.

Other reasons to rewire your home include whether your sockets look like the round pin types as these are archaic, sockets placed within skirting boards will need to b fitted into another area, braided rope hanging from light fittings and if you have fuses which could be rewired.

We will complete all the rewiring throughout your home and will complete the work to meet all the most up to date standards.

Electrical Testing

Electrical testing is incredibly important practice to carry out within domestic homes. The testing results in a certificate which details the report made from your electrics. This is a legal document so it needs to be kept safe. The test reveals whether any circuits or equipment is being overloaded by too many electrical items; in other words, there is too much demand upon the power source.

It also highlights any fire hazards, safety hazards, damaged or defective work or equipment, lack of earthing and any risks which are evident such as electrical shock risks.

Lighting Installation

There are a wide variety of lighting options which can be installed within your home. These include the types of bulb to use such as LED lights, energy-saving bulbs, whether you want spotlights and also the kind of fixture you would like to incorporate. We will happily sit and chat with our clients to discover what their plans are for their rooms (even if these are long term plans) and advise them on the best options available to them.

We can then install the lighting throughout your home so it suits the end result you are looking to achieve. We also help each of our clients gain a more energy efficient home by providing energy efficient options to them.

We do this just be assessing the type of lighting within your home, the use of each room and whether you switch off lights as you leave rooms. All of this information will help us to help you be more energy efficient and save on your utility bills.

Fuse & consumer units

Consumer units have replaced the old rewirable fuses which are now outdated and would be considered somewhat old fashioned. Rewirable fuses still offer some level of protection to your electrics. When your circuit experiences a fault or a spike/overload in its current then the fuse will break the circuit. We can update these systems but we would advise them be replaced so they are up to date with the most modern and current standards.

Mini Circuit Breakers are replacements for the rewirable fuses while the original fuse box can be maintained. The mini circuit breaker offers automatic protection as it turns off the circuit as soon as it detects a fault within the system. As you can tell from the description, this fixture does not offer any additional protection that the outdated rewirable fuses but do offer an easier reset to the system.

The new alternative to the rewirable fuses and the mini circuit breaker is the consumer unit. This unit is up to date with all of the recommended regulations and standards within the electrical industry. The additional protection is offered through what is called the residual current device. This is a safety appliance which automatically switches off the electrical supply if there is a fault detected within your circuit. They are more enhanced because they are a lot more sensitive than the usual fuses and mini circuit breakers. They are also quicker to act and can have the power supply cut off within 30 milliseconds!

We are able to update your fuses and mini circuit breakers with the new consumer unit or we can change your rewireable fuses to a mini circuit breaker but we would always recommend having the safest product within the market. We are happy to chat to our customers at length about the benefits of the new consumer unit and explain how it works.

Fire & Smoke Alarm

While fire alarms are a regulation for any property which is being inhabited, it is still surprising how many homeowners either do not have a fire alarm or a fire system of some sort in their dwelling, or they have one but they do not know how it works or it is not in working order for long periods of time.

We do get people telling us they were meaning to get round to organising an electrician to come to fix their systems and alarms but time ran away with them. Our advice is do not let time run away as the consequences could be horrific. With our 24 hour call out service we can come and fix any fire alarm or system and offer you peace of mind that your household is protected from the – thankfully – usually rare occurrence of fire within the home.

We also always aim to beat the prices of any quote you have while offering excellent customer service just to make Spotson the easiest choice for you to make. We can deal with any wiring issues or can replace the system if there is a fault within it such as a system shorting.

Security Systems

It is a sad fact that homes need to be protected with security systems to help prevent them being targeted by burglars but this is all too often the case. It is better to be on the safe time and protect your house and your belongings from being stolen. At Spotson we are armed and ready with all the information you will need about the fire and smoke alarms and systems which are available. We can help you choose which would best suit your needs and we can install these systems on your behalf.

We can also carry out tests to these systems and fix any faults which may be lurking.

Outdoor Power

Lights and heaters in garden spaces are a popular among homeowners as they each offer the ability to use a garden for longer periods of time instead of just the short summers we experience in the UK! They are also brilliant at making a garden look inviting, homely and attractive.

There is a really good variety of products on the market when it comes to outdoor lighting and heaters, as well as other outdoor products which require electricity.

However due to the more dangerous conditions when using outside power, it is important to follow some key steps in order to guarantee the safety of your family and friends.

Firstly, ALWAYS use a qualified electrician to install your outdoor power supply along with any equipment which needs to be wired. Ensure this electrician carries the national safety standards for electrical installations (BS 7671). Your electrician should be insured for all the work they carry out.

  • Buy good quality equipment from trustworthy retailers.
  • Ensure that the lights you purchase have waterproof fittings and consider buying covers for them.
  • Lights for water features such as ponds or fountains should have waterproof fittings and fixtures.
  • Keep the equipment clean and tidy.

If you come across any damage or faults within your outdoor power system, in the equipment you have or in the wiring then turn off the power supply straight away and have the damage repaired before you use these items again.

Fault Finding

As with anything in life, electrical fixtures, equipment, wires and so on will deteriorate or break or become faulty given time and usage. As electricity and power supplies to homes is usually very well used, it is not surprising that issues occur. At Spotson, we can check through your property and repair and replace any damage or faulty equipment which may cause you the inconvenience of supplies not working properly or, worse still, be dangerous.

If you think you have a fault in any of your equipment then call us today – don’t delay. We run a 24hours emergency service so we are always on hand to visit your property at day or night.
